A Hand Balance + Mobility Workshop

Join hand balancer & mobility specialist, Elise Ingenito for a 2-day workshop that focuses on the fundamentals of hand balance with an emphasis on mobility and end range strength.    

This workshop is suitable for all levels and will begin with the basics of hand balance, including how to safely get upside down, what proper alignment looks AND feels like, wrist preparation and a number of mobility and strengthening drills you can take home with you.  Mobility plays a crucial role in hand balance.  You will learn how to increase your active range of motion using Stretch Therapy and FRC principles – the key to advancing your handstand practice.



Beginner Hand Balance + Intro to Stretch Therapy

Day one focuses on the basics of hand balance. We’ll go through all the setup necessary for injury-free hand balancing from wrist prep, strengthening and stretching drills and proper body alignment. We’ll also go through basic entries, how to bail out or “fall” safely and how to spot your partner. Learn strengthening and balancing drills that will allow you to work towards a freestanding handstand. 

In order to maximize our handstand work, we’ll be placing equal importance on mobility.  As a Certified Stretch Therapy Teacher, Elise will introduce you to Kit Laughlin’s Stretch Therapy protocol.  You’ll learn about, and put into practice, PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation) stretching, also known as the Contract-Relax approach. We’ll also practice partial poses and have some fun with partner assisted stretches.  Using specific breathing and relaxation techniques, you will learn how to connect the mind to the body allowing for greater ranges of motion.


Intermediate Hand Balance + Intro to the FRC system

In day 2 of the workshop, we’ll assess the strengths and skills of the group and progress even further. We’ll practice more advanced wall drills and explore different handstand shapes and transitions.  If time allows, we’ll move on to side-bending, press and one-arm work.  Let’s see how far we can go!

Building upon the Stretch Therapy work from Day 1, we will learn how to increase strength in our newly acquired ranges using the FRC system.  Gain body control, bullet-proof your joints and maximize your movement potential with end range strength training exercises such as CARs (Controlled Articular Rotations) and PAILs and RAILs.  Get ready to dive deeper into the movements, the theories and the practice of full body mobilization. 

The goal of this workshop is to leave you with the tools needed to continue to develop balance, strength and mobility for your hand balance journey!
